Underlying Threads: Interpreting the Textile History of a Mill Town

Work by Maine Members of the Surface Design Association

September 27 – November 2, 2013

Reception: September 27, 5 – 8 pm

Tammy Ackerman, Executive Director of Engine, is enthusiastically committed to featuring our group as the first exhibition in the newly renovated Engine space located at 129 Main Street, Biddeford, Maine. The street-front 3,000 sq. ft. gallery will be a jewel to showcase our work! Ceiling height will be approximately 12 feet with a ceiling grid system in place to allow free hanging away from the walls as well as ample wall space.

For those of you wishing to see this new space in the early planning stages, Tammy has offered to give us a tour on Monday, April 8th. Please plan to meet at Engine’s current location, 265 Main Street, #103 promptly at 1:00 pm. In addition to touring 129 Main Street, a visit is planned to the West Point Mill building now home to the Saco River Dye House and A Gathering of Stitches. We hope you’ll join us. Biddeford is quite exciting these days!

We anticipate that a Maine Surface Design Association member in good standing (paid dues) will be able to show from one to three, theme-related pieces. Installations and collaborations are possible. For each piece the artist will provide a brief statement (150 words or less) explaining its conceptual tie to the theme. The statement and label information will be collected through a database link provided by Tammy six weeks prior to the exhibit opening. PR photographs of works created for this exhibit will, also, be due at this time.

Work must be delivered two weeks prior to the exhibit opening ready for installation including hanging/display fixtures. Shipping arrangements may be made with the artist pre-paying return shipping. At the discretion of the curator of Engine, a submitted work may be excluded from the show because of space considerations or because it does not meet the standards of the gallery.

The commission structure is a 40%/60% split with the artist receiving 60% of the sale. Works ‘Not for Sale’ may also be displayed. Works will be covered by insurance while in the custody of Engine.
