Winter Blues: Sat and Sun, March 23 and 24, 9 am to 4:30pm
Lift Your Spirits this Spring: Sat and Sun, April 20 and 21, 9am to 4:30pm
Come to a two day Indigo dyeing workshop with Kathy at her studio, “Artistic Endeavors” on 9 Main St., Bowdoinham, Maine.
Indigo is the color of the night sky and the depths of the sea, indigo is a gift of nature nourished by earth, sun and rain. Indigo is among the oldest of textile dyes and has been used throughout the world since ancient times. Today, most indigo dye is synthetic. Kathy has visited Japan twice and studied with several of today’s shibori scholars. No experience necessary, all levels welcome. A wonderful beginning workshop for quilters wishing to make their own fabric pieces.
Day 1 will focus on vat preparation, general information and study of indigo shibori fabrics and techniques for design purposes. We will prepare a few fabrics pieces to dye to get a sense of indigo’s nature. After lunch, Kathy will demonstrate various stitched patterns and give plenty of time for participants to relax and stitch. There will be some homework — mainly stitching as you ready some fabrics for Day 2.
Day 2 will be a full day! We will begin with demonstrations of different shibori techniques. The rest of the day will be spent creating new patterns, dyeing, wondering and learning at the edge of the vat.
Aside from the experience, understanding and a bit of indigo practice, you will come away with a collection of indigo dyed fabrics in various solid shades, ombre dyed pieces, shibori and invented randomly patterned fabric. You may even have time and desire to dye a scarf.
You will have the use of a very large indigo dye vat and a variety of fabric types, including cottons, silks, hemp, bamboo, and linen.
$90 per day with an additional $25 materials fee (cash is preferred, but checks will be accepted) to be collected at the beginning of class.
For the first workshop, please RSVP by Friday, March 15th and for the second workshop RSVP by Friday, April 12th if possible. Workshop size 4-6 participants.
