“Art in the Park” Artist Reception

On Friday, May 3rd at 4:30pm, Circling the Square Fine Art Press will host a public reception and artist’s talk featuring this year’s “Art in the Park” grant recipient Susan Perrine. The Art in the Park program, which is in its fourth year, is funded by a grant from the Harry Faust Art Fund.

At 5:00pm, Susan will give a brief presentation about her work, which features woven twig sculptures made from locally sourced materials. Susan’s installation in Johnson Park (directly across the street from Circling the Square) will be unveiled, and will be displayed from May through October. Prior to the event, the public will have an opportunity to participate in the actual construction of the piece on Saturday, April 27th, from 11am-1pm.

Susan Perrine’s work reflects on her connection to the natural environment. She states, “I grew up on a farm and have always spent a lot of time outdoors, walking the fields and woods near home. I try to use methods and materials to reflect the connection I feel towards the natural environment.” Susan began weaving twig sculpture as a way to teach weaving on a large scale. Her twig structures are an easy way to demonstrate how simple materials, when aligned carefully, can create useful and beautiful works of art.

After the reception and unveiling of the sculpture, Susan will be showing her work at Johnson Hall (which is adjacent to the park) during ArtWalk Gardiner, which will take place along Water Street from 5:30-9:00pm. Circling the Square Fine Art Press members and many other area artists will also have plenty of new and original work to enjoy during the ArtWalk, so please come out and celebrate art with us in downtown Gardiner!
